We are creating a unique experience, Bethshean is a unique community. Social welfare is a great evil, it robs the individual of their dignity, and pride that comes from self reliance. anyway it is best handled by charities and relief organizations.

Planning and zoning? Am I that afraid of what my neighbors will do? one would think the risks to an individuals personal freedom would not be worth this intrusion. The bethshean mandate of "do no harm" is the best solution we can offer

Guidelines 4

In the United States of America, it was figured, for every person receiving welfare benefits there were 5 social workers, and or administrators employed by the program. Anyone who works and pays taxes is voluntarily supporting someone the government feels is disadvantaged, and also 5 administrators. Is this fair? It seems more like a jobs creation program than a social welfare program. It would be more efficient to have say 5 or 10 local families "adopt" a family in need, and help them till they can get back on their feet again. Most people don't mind giving someone a hand up, but not a hand out. This is best organized by local religious, or aid groups. Local assistance groups have a better grasp on the real needs of the person they are helping, and a generally more efficient. one could argue that the economies of scale work for government programs, but when one figures how unexacting the help is it looses its efficiency. Sure it may be good at getting every one in the program toilet paper, but what if one person needs notebook paper instead.

A few years ago, The citizens of Washington state defeated a law setting up a state wide planning and zoning council. to put it in the simplest terms possible. They were being asked to pay someone to tell them what they can and cannot do on or with their own property. If someone is planning to set up a garbage landfill next to your property you might be glad to have a P & Z council. Otherwise how much do they really do for you? We pay for a large number of agencies that we never or rarely use. These agencies dictate their rules to us, and fine us if we do not comply. Why not make this a matter for the civil courts. If the landfill is harming your business, or polluting your land, sue them.

Bad governing bodies reward the powerful at the expense of the weak. A good government rewards the majority and the powerful. The best government only attempts to right the worst wrongs while doing as little damage as possible. The Administration in Bethshean runs on the mandate of "Do No Harm."  It is not always achievable, but it is a goal we strive for.
