At one time it was considered proper that the president of a company should make approximately 25 times the wages of the common worker. We should apply this to government as well.
The president or prime minister of a nation should only make 25 times the wage of the average citizen, legislators should make a similar ratio say 20 times the average citizen's wage (that would be total compensation.) As we grow wealthier, so should our leaders. If we live in squalor, then our leaders should live in a better squalor, but still a squalor. This should be an automatic thing too. If the economy booms, then our leaders should get an automatic raise every year. If the economy goes bust then their wages should drop accordingly. much the same as you or I, having to take a lower paying position, or one with fewer benefits, while doing the same job.
Congress and president Obama required that auto executives accept reduced compensation in return for a bailout. The president and congress, should abide by the same rule. They were at the minimum, asleep at the wheel, or as is my opinion, complicit in the recession of 2008.
